About the Club

Upton Upon Severn Rugby club was founded in 1981 in Ye Olde Anchor pub in the centre of Town and the club colours of black and white quarters stem from the fact the pub is housed in a black and white timber building.

The club has gone from strength to strength since its formation and now runs Senior men’s and ladies teams, junior mixed rugby from ages 5 to 17 and an individual girl’s squad from ages 12 to 17.

The club house and grounds sit in a beautiful location in the middle of town overlooked by the impressive Parish church. Our location is the envy of many of our visiting teams and our cosy bar and function room is ideal for small gatherings.
Most importantly we are a rugby club and our aim is to be friendly, inclusive and community driven.

We welcome sponsorship from local businesses which along with our paying members allows us to continue to drive the club forward from both a playing and facility side.

Our Background

Upton RFC is in the centre of Upton Upon Severn, the smallest (big) town in Worcestershire has the unfortunate claim to fame being “the most flooded town in Britain”. After many devastating floods that severely damaged the community (and our clubhouse!), Upton is slowly but surely recovering and is protected from future problems due to the installation of permanent flood defences.

Our clubhouse is now protected by a most efficient bund system and we are constantly developing and making our facilities more appealing for home and away teams, spectators and the local community in general.

We believe our club is an important hub of community life, many of our members and players (past and present) are from farming and countryside industries and the sporting and social activities represent an important focal point.

Rugby is open to everyone in the community and we have reduced fees for students, unemployed and families with a large number of children.

With close to 100 Senior Members, a hugely successful and rapidly growing Junior Section (180 in various age groups), we are also very proud of our more recently formed Ladies’ Side and full contact rugby for the newly formed Junior Ladies Section.

We have a growing dedicated group of supporters who follow the team every Saturday and we are seeing a strong growth in the numbers watching from ‘The Bund’.

We try to run two Saturday adult men’s teams but with only one set of changing rooms this can be challenging. We also have a ‘Floaters’ team which offers rugby to those players maybe slightly older in age or those whose commitment cannot extend to every week but still enjoy the odd game. These games often occur on a Friday night under our floodlights which are the envy of many clubs at our level.

With a very successful Junior Section we regularly welcome 200-300 parents, players and supporters to the club. The Junior section reinforces and supports rugby’s core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship by ensuring we provide players with quality coaching which is player focused.
